Holly Students Learn About Fire Prevention
By Anna Troppens of the Tri-County Times

Holly — Holly Fire Department held fire prevention lessons at Karl
Richter Campus on Thursday, for National Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Officer Mike Mishler emphasized to the preschool
students that it is important for their family to have a meeting place
outside, in case of a fire. This allows firefighters to quickly establish if
everyone is out of the house. If parents are divorced and children stay at
two homes, they should have a meeting place outside of each home.

In addition, children should not be afraid of firefighters, even if they
sound like the Darth Vader character in Star Wars when they have their
gear on, Mishler said. Youngsters should call out or throw toys to get a
firefighter’s attention, if they are trapped inside a burning house.

The students were told they should call 911 only if there is a fire, medical
or other emergency.

Emergency Medical Technician Wayne Newman showed students a fire
truck and an ambulance. Children received fire safety coloring and
activity books, glow bracelets and pencils from the Holly Fire
Department.

The students were impressed with the firefighters’ air tank. One boy
joked that it could be used to “blast off".
